Colin Calderwood today confirmed that a new goalkeeper is on Forest's summer shopping list,
Northampton Town's Mark Bunn is rumoured to be the number one target.
The Reds boss still has faith in Paul Smith, who yesterday won the "Golden Gloves" award for keeping the most (25 in total) clean sheets in the Football League (he was 2nd the season before).
However Calderwood believes it is crucial to generate a fight for places to ensure Smith remains at his best, which is why he is considering a bid for Bunn, who is valued at £1m.
"It is something we have to look at, the goalkeeping position," said Calderwood.
"Our situation at the moment is that we have Paul Smith and then three young goalkeepers in Paddy Gamble, Dale Roberts and Shane Redmond.
"We can get Paddy and Dale to Conference clubs on loan and have had inquiries from League clubs as well - their progression now has to be to play first team football.
"But we have to have cover, we need a more experienced keeper."
And Calderwood says they want somebody who is capable of challenging Smith for his place in the side.
"We need somebody to put Paul under pressure.
"He is very calm and has done his job very well and it has never been a problem not having a goalkeeper on the bench," he said.
"But, at the start of next season, we will have a sub keeper."
Northampton chairman David Cardoza said: "I haven't heard anything from them (Forest) yet but I wouldn't be surprised if they did give me a call.
"We've had about six bids for the player from them already.
"Mark is a terrific player and we've got an idea of a fee we would like for him.
"We're not in the market to sell him, but if the right offer came in we'd have to listen to it."
