Joe GarnerForest have reportedly bid £500,000 for Carlisle striker Joe Garner.

Calderwood has also confirmed that former England front-man Andy (Andrew) Cole could also sign this week.

Garner, 20, is believed to have been offered a three-year contract at the city ground.

The speedy former Blackburn apprentice - who cost Carlise £140,000 last summer - netted 14 goals in 30 starts in League One last season, before picking up a knee ligament injury in February.

Speaking about Andy Cole, Calderwood said "There has also been contact with Andy and we will try to follow up on that.

"His experience could be an important addition to the squad.  When you look at the input that the senior players had for West Brom and Hull last season, it is important.

“Andy still has a burning desire to be successful and hopefully we can move things forwards.”

It is believed Nottingham-born Cole, 36, who has been released by Premiership Sunderland, is keen on a coaching role and could be tempted if promised a part to play off the pitch.

But Forest are convinced he retains the hunger for success – and hope he can have the same impact as Dean Windass, 39, had for Hull City last season in the Championship.

Cole scored six goals in eight starts and five sub appearances while on loan with Burnley in the Championship last season and boasts a career goal-scoring record of almost a goal every other game.
